Gustav Mahler – Symphony No. 5

Estonian National Symphony Orchestra
Conductor NIKOLAI ALEXEEV

In 2010 the world of music celebrates the 150th birth anniversary of the Austrian composer and conductor Gustav Mahler and in 2011 the centenary of his death. During the current and next season, Mahler’s music has pride of place in the repertoire of a great number of orchestras.

The best known among Mahler’s ten symphonies is most probably the Fifth. Herbert von Karajan, the long-time principal conductor of Berliner Philharmoniker has said that when you hear Mahler’s Fifth, “you forget that time has passed. The fantastic finale almost forces you to hold your breath.”

The orchestra is conducted by artistic director Nikolai Alexeev.
