On February 26, 2010, we celebrate the birth centenary of Olav Roots (1910–1974), an Estonian conductor, pianist and composer of world renown. He was the principal conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the National Broadcasting Corporation (the predecessor of ERSO) from 1939–1944. Despite the hard times, he achieved the high artistic quality of the orchestra and paid special attention to performing the works of Estonian composers. In 1944 he fled to Sweden and in 1952 settled in Colombia. In his new homeland he founded the country’s first professional symphony orchestra – Orquesta Sinfonica de Colombia – and was its principal conductor until his death.

The Estonian audience will have the first opportunity to hear his Symphony created in Colombia in 1967. Film director Katrin Laur is completing a film about Olav Roots (Roots: a Hundred Years of War and Music), for which the concert and its rehearsals will be recorded.

The soloist in Sibelius’ Violin Concerto is Alexandra Soumm, the winner of the Eurovision Young Musicians Competition in Lucerne in 2004. The repertoire of the Russian-born 20-year-old violinist already includes several highlights of violin music. She has performed as a soloist with such orchestras as the Israel Philharmonics, Lyon National Orchestra, Vienna Chamber Orcherstra, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris and Orchestre National d’Île de France.
