The AFEKT International Modern Music Festival is a continuation of the Estonian Composers’ Festival held in Tartu for 15 years, and which has recently expanded to Tallinn. The goal of the festival is to bring the European contemporary music environment in front of Estonian audiences; indeed, the name change was primarily triggered by the gradual expansion of the festival into an international music event. The composers at AFEKT 2016 include the living classic Georg Friedrich Haas, and an Estonian composer with an international grasp, Toivo Tulev. The theme throughout the festival is “visual musical theatre”. The artistic director of the festival is Monika Mattiesen.

The title composition of the concert, “Dark Dreams”, by the Austrian composer Georg Friedrich Haas, was jointly commissioned by the Berlin Philharmonic and Carnegie Hall, and has been compared to the soundtrack for a thriller. Toivo Tulev’s new composition “Black Mirror” was commissioned by the AFEKT festival.

Founded in 2008, Hoca Nasreddin is a trio whose members improvise with timbre and texture, thereby creating a complex and colourful sound. The orchestra will be conducted by Michael Wendenberg, who has been the musical director of the Ensemble Contrechamps since 2011, an orchestra focused on performing contemporary music.

Pre-concert at 6 pm
There will be a performance of the American composer Brian Current’s 2008 piece “A Young Person’s Guide to New Music”, which introduces to listeners features common to 20th and 21st century music. The topics include form, rhythm, pitch, harmony, texture, colour, melody, performance contexts and electronic music. The actor and composer Ardo Ran Varres will also be participating in the event.
