Next to a great forest there lived a poor woodcutter with his wife and two children. The boy’s name was Hansel and the girl’s was Gretel. He had but little to eat, and once, when a great famine came to the land, he could no longer provide even their daily bread.
These are the opening lines of the fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel” by Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm. More than a hundred years ago, a German mother wrote a short play based on this story for her children. The children performed the play at home, and to make the show even more interesting, their mother asked her brother to write a few songs for the play. The brother was none other than the German composer Engelbert Humperdinck. This is how the fairy tale opera “Hansel and Gretel” was born, captivating many generations of children as well as their parents and grandparents. Adelheid Wette’s text is translated into Estonian by Peeter Volkonski.
