The performances of the first Estonian oratorio Jonah’s Mission by Rudolf Tobias have always played a significant role in the history of Estonia. The work, which was premiered in 1909 in Leipzig and whose Sanctus movement was played at the inauguration ceremony of the building of the Estonia theatre in 1913, was only performed in full in front of local audiences in 1989 under the baton of Peeter Lilje – this was considered an important step on the road to independence.

In Estonia, Jonah’s Mission was last heard when the Estonian Republic celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2008, and last June it was successfully performed at Leipzig Gewandhaus under the baton of Neeme Järvi. Jonah’s Mission, played by ENSO under Neeme Järvi, has also been released on CD and DVD.

“Listening to “Jonah” and following its text one cannot help but admire how extraordinarily well this gigantic work forms a unified whole. /…/ The masterpiece, which lasts almost three hours, goes by as in one deep breath.” (Ia Remmel, Postimees, 24.11.2008)

In Tartu, Jonah’s Mission will inaugurate the newly renovated St. Paul’s Church. The performances of Jonah’s Mission are dedicated to the 65th birthday of Peeter Lilje (1950–1993), a former principal conductor of ENSO.
