Screening a cult movie with a live soundtrack!
This screening of the popular Hollywood movie On the Waterfront, which belongs among the best film classics, is special because it is accompanied by a live performance of the score by a symphony orchestra. In 1954, the movie won eight Academy Awards, most importantly for Best Actor, awarded to Marlon Brando for the leading role, an American actor who managed to combine the image of an action hero with the critical attitude of a political activist. Thirty-five years after the premiere, the criminal drama about the concerns of American life was deemed culturally, historically and aesthetically significant and selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.
On the Waterfront will be screened to celebrate Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday. Bernstein was one of the most powerful promoters of classical music during the latter half of the 20th century, with the famous Broadway musical West Side Story as his most influential work. On the Waterfront was Bernstein’s only original film score.
The screening will be conducted by Olari Elts, the guest principal conductor of ENSO. In parallel with the classical orchestra repertoire, Elts has brought several programmes to audiences that include various multimedia solutions.
