A programme entirely dedicated to American composers and a performance by one of the brightest cellists of his generation, Grammy-winner Zuill Bailey, who, in addition to his homeland, the U.S., has forged a brilliant international career.
The central piece of the programme is Tales of Hemingway, Michael Daugherty’s cello concerto from 2015, based on the works of the novelist, his fellow countryman.
Tales of Hemingway and cellist Zuill Bailey were triumphant at the Grammy Awards Gala in February 2017, winning a total of three awards: in the categories of the Best Classical Compendium, Best Classical Instrumental Solo, and Best Contemporary Classical Composition. Zuill Bailey, praised for his sensual sound, technical mastery, griping performances, and dramatism, ‘more than meets the score’s demands with playing that combines fervour and poetry’. (Donald Rosenberg, Gramophone).
