Conductor MIKKO FRANCK

Finnish conductor Mikko Franck, who after winning our hearts last season, will return again this year to conduct the opening concert of the season. After years working as principal conductor of the National Orchestra of Belgium and the Finnish National Opera, Franck will become the next principal conductor of the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra in autumn 2015.

The first half of the concert is dedicated to contemporary music classics from both sides of the Gulf of Finland. “Cantus arcticus”, one of the most well-known works by Einojuhani Rautavaara, combines orchestral sound with bird song recorded in northern areas of the Arctic Circle in Finland and the bogs of northern Ostrobothnia. The sole opera by Veljo Tormis “Swan Flight” tells the story of the bonds between man and nature, interpersonal relationships, inner struggles and the search for balance.

Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 “Pathétique” is among the best-known symphonies by the composer. After its premiere, only a few days before his death, Tchaikovsky wrote: “I am more proud of this symphony than of any other of my works.”
