The Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra – one of the two large symphony orchestras in Lithuania – was established in 1988 by its current principal conductor Gintaras Rinkevičius and is based in the Vilnius Congress Concert Hall, well known for its wonderful acoustics.
The concert in Tallinn, which features exciting works from the beginning of the 20th century, will begin with a musical gift by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, a phenomenal Lithuanian painter and composer, whose oeuvre, both in music and painting, is very rich in symbols. Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand was written for Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in the First World War. The second half of the concert will be filled with the music of Igor Stravinsky’s scandalous ballet “The Rite of Spring”, which had a major influence on 20th century music.
Internationally highly acclaimed Latvian pianist Vestards Šimkus will appear as a soloist. Šimkus performs in front of the best orchestras in the most famous concert halls of the world, and has also repeatedly charmed Estonian audiences. After a successful tour of Japan with the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra in 2005, he was awarded the Order of the White Star of Estonia, 5th Class.
Paavo Järvi: “Vestards Šimkus is a phenomenon! He has his own personality, self-confidence and technical brilliance. Some people may talk of the end of the age of classical music but when you hear a Shimkus’ performance, you can be sure that classical music is quite well.”
The orchestra will be conducted by Martynas Staškus, who in addition to conducting the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, has worked for more than 20 years at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre, also as the principal conductor.
