In programme:

JENS BJÖRN-LARSEN (tuba, Denmark)
Estonian National Symphony Orchestra
Conductor LEV MARKIZ (The Netherlands)

The concert celebrates the 10th anniversary of Klassikaraadio – the Classical Music Department of the Estonian Radio. There will be a premiere of the first Estonian tuba concerto at this concert.

The Danish tuba player Jens Björn-Larsen has had a successful soloist career for over 10 years. “He is an excellent tuba player with outstanding abilities and technique,” said the composer of the tuba concerto Eino Tamberg. Evidently Björn-Larsen was inspired by Tamberg’s Brass Quintet and the famous First Trumpet Concerto and therefore commissioned a tuba concerto from him.

For many years Lev Markiz worked with major symphony orchestras and soloists of the Soviet Union. For ten years he was the leader of the Moscow Chamber Orchestra and also founded his own orchestra called “The soloists of Moscow” that acquired a very special place in Russian music. About 20 years ago he emigrated to the Netherlands and became an outcast in his homeland. However, he then started to work in Europe, Canada and Israel. Last summer he conducted five ERSO’s chamber orchestra concerts in Estonia.
