Anna Makarova has won an International Harp Competition that was held in Israel in 1994. Since then she has given many recitals and is a member of St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. As the principal harpist of the orchestra she performs all the important harp solos at the orchestra’s concerts in St. Petersburg and abroad. Today’s concert is conducted by Nikolai Alekseev who is a Principal Conductor of ERSO and also a conductor of St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
The music of this concert was written during the first years of the 20th century – French impressionists Debussy’s and Ravel’s colourful paintings of sound with solo harp and the late-Romantic composer Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No 5.
