Neeme Järvi, who on June 7 is celebrating his 70th birthday, is one of the most famous Estonians in the world. He studied conducting with Nikolai Rabinovitsh and Jevgeny Mravinsky at the Leningrad State Conservatoire. During the years 1963-1975 he was the principal conductor and musical director of the Estonian National Opera and in 1963-1979 also the principal conductor of ERSO. Neeme Järvi is Chief Conductor of the Residentie Orkest (The Hague), Principal Conductor and Music Director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Music Director Emeritus of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Principal Conductor Emeritus of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, First Principal Guest Conductor of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra and Conductor Laureate of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Neeme Järvi has recorded more than 350 discs and many titles and awards have been bestowed on him worldwide.
