Steven Schick was born in Iowa (USA) and raised in a farming family. Over the course of thirty years as a solo percussionist he has commissioned and premiered more than a hundred new works for percussion. He has performed this music internationally at major festivals and venues including the Jerusalem Festival, Lincoln Center’s Great Performers Series (New York), the Los Angeles Philharmonic Green Umbrella Series, The Warsaw Autumn Festival and at the Sydney Opera House among many others. He has recorded for SONY Classical, Neuma, Newport Classics, OO-Discs and Point Records.
Since January 2000, Steven Schick has been Artistic Director of the Centre International de Percussion (Geneva, Switzerland). He is also Professor of Music at the University of California, San Diego and a lecturer in percussion at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. He is percussionist with the Bang on a Can All-Stars and collaborates regularly with cellist Maya Beiser and the percussion group, “red fish blue fish.”
