Rimsky-Korsakov – The Tsar’s Bride Ouverture
Tchaikovsky – Piano Concerto No 1 b flat minor
Pärt – Symphony No. 2
Shostakovich – Symphony No. 9 E flat major
Elts sharply outlines the polarity between chaotic forces and crystalline transcendence. Following on from this, he accompanies Cristina Ortiz through Mendelssohn’s First Piano Concerto with a distinguished detachment, and then to end conducts a Mahler for whom luxuriating in idylls of nature is no longer possible. Free of mist and brooding sultriness, the composer’s First Symphony develops its tremendous strength in clarity, without displays of irony or demonstrations of fragility. A triumph of music; cheers for Olari Elts and the DSO’.
Der Tagesspiegel 16 May 2003
‘And what a conductor Olari Elts proved to be. One can see perfectly well why the 31-year-old Estonian is regarded as one of Europe’s brightest rising conducting talents. He is enormously skilled: deeply focused on the music, immaculate in his direction, and precise in every gesture…… pray that he comes back here some day’.
