2nd concert of FESTIVO series
Schönberg. “Verklärte Nacht” (“Transfigured Night”), Op. 4
Deep clear-skied peace
Slips silently into you
What words cannot grasp
(Doris Kareva, translated by Doris Kareva and Miriam McIlfatrick-Ksenofontov)
“Awakening” by Erkki-Sven Tüür was written for a mixed choir and orchestra in 2011 in honour of Tallinn – European Capital of Culture. The recording of the piece performed by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, Sinfonietta Riga and conductor Daniel Reuss has been very warmly received. The composer has reflected on the meaning of the work as follows: “Awakening like waking up from sleep, waking to a new life, the awakening of dulled senses to clarity, religious awakening, the wakening of nature in spring… this word has an extremely profound and extensive field of meaning. I believe that awakening can be viewed as a life-long process, contrary to falling asleep and fading away.” (Erkki-Sven Tüür)
Tüür has used poetry by Juhan Liiv, Ernst Enno, Jaan Kaplinski and Doris Kareva along with Latin liturgical texts for Easter.
Arnold Schoenberg’s string sextet, “Transfigured Night”, later arranged for a string orchestra, is one of the most important from the composer’s juvenilia. The piece is inspired by Richard Dehmel’s poem of the same name, which begins with the words:
Two people walking through a bare, cold moor the moon races along with them and draws their gaze.
The conductor is Daniel Reuss, who has been successfully cooperating both with EPCC and ENSO for the past several years.
Tickets: 20 € / 15 €.
