Franz Joseph Haydn
Oratorio Creation

AILE ASSZONYI (soprano, Estonian National Opera)
MATI TURI (tenor)
Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir
Estonian National Symphony Orchestra

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light, and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. (Gen 1: 1–3).

Franz Joseph Haydn’s oratorio The Creation (1796–1798) is based on the creation of the world as described in the Book of Genesis, the Psalms and John Milton’s poem Paradise Lost (1667). This work has remained popular in concert repertoire for over two centuries since its successful premiere in Vienna.
