Former principal conductor of ERSO, Nikolai Alexeev, continues to promote the music based on Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy for Estonian audiences. Alexeev has conducted the works of Boris Tishchenko both in Russia and Europe; he also conducted at the premiere of three Dante symphonies (No 2, 3 and 5). While a couple of years ago, Tallinn was thrilled by Tishchenko’s Dante Symphony No 5 (Paradise), this year will see the performance of the third part of the five-part series, entitled Inferno.
The title character in the opening work of the concert, Tchaikovsky’s symphonic poem Francesca da Rimini, is also a historical figure from the pages of Dante’s Divine Comedy.
