Still for Violin and Orchestra
EVA-CHRISTINA SCHÖNWEIß violin
Estonian National Symphony Orchestra
Conductor BAS WIEGERS
The symphony concert ‘Extended Imagination’ of the AFEKT festival features the works of the festival’s main composers. The orchestra piece Tableau oscillates the sounds, noises, and images of Helmut Lachenmann, a living classic of contemporary music; English-German composer Rebecca Saunders’ violin concerto Still searches for a fragile balance, vibration, and silence; Torf by German composer and conductor Enno Poppe fuses chaos and order, form and improvisation. The programme also includes new pieces from Estonian author Elo Masing, who was educated in London and lives in Berlin, and by Arash Yazdan, a composer with Iranian roots residing in Estonia.
The concert is conducted by the charismatic Dutch conductor Bas Wiegers, whose cooperation with the ENSO started at the 2016 Köln music festival Acht Brücken.
The concert is preceded by a talk with Helmut Lachenmann, Rebecca Saunders, and Enno Poppe.
