Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. Oratorio St Paul, Op 36

Mixed Choir Latvija
Estonian National Symphony Orchestra
Conductor OLARI ELTS

Eesti Kontsert concludes its season with Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s oratorio St Paul, conducted by Olari Elts, the principal guest conductor of ERSO and Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, and artistic adviser of Orchestre de Bretagne.

The plot of the oratorio which speaks about the life of Apostle St Paul has been taken from the New Testament. Mendelssohn’s musical ideals were primarily the baroque masters Bach and Handel. He became the first enthusiastic promoter of Bach’s music which was then almost unknown to the public at large. In St Paul, too, the musical language of the romanticism period is mixed with the traditions of the baroque and classicism.
