Conductor NEEME JÄRVI
The second concert in the series of piano concertos by Beethoven, in which renowned Estonian pianist Kalle Randalu, conductor Neeme Järvi and ENSO will offer audiences all five of the composer’s piano concertos over two seasons, is combined with festive English ceremonial music.
Charles Hubert H. Parry and Edward Elgar were peers and composers who both made a considerable contribution to the English musical renaissance at the beginning of the 20th century. The works by Parry, which were recently released on CD (Chandos) by Neeme Järvi, BBC National Chorus and the Orchestra of Wales – “Te Deum”, by the way, being the premiere recording – likely offering Estonian audiences many pleasant discoveries.
“Pomp and Circumstance” by Elgar is a series of military marches, in which the beautiful melody of the first, the popular “Land of Hope and Glory” has become a second national anthem for the English people. Elgar borrowed the title of the cycle from “Othello” by Shakespeare:
… the neighing steed and the shrill trump,
the spirit-stirring drum, the ear-piercing fife,
the royal banner, and all the grality, pride,
pomp and circumstance of glorious war.
