Conductor OLARI ELTS

Under the baton of Olari Elts, who will be focusing on the major heavyweight pieces in music history this season, the audience will hear a concert based on the themes of the universe. The main piece of the evening is Gustav Mahler’s “The Song of the Earth”, which Leonard Bernstein dubbed Mahler’s best symphony. The soloists are the world-renowned mezzo-soprano Annely Peebo and the tenor Mati Turi, who definitely belong among the best oratorio singers in Estonia.

The first half of the concert will include two Estonian premières. According to Elts, the French composer Charles Koechlin, whose 150th birthday will be in 2017, was as good at orchestration as Debussy and Ravel. Unfortunately, he has remained undeservedly in the shadow of his famous compatriots.

“What made it really special was Elts remarkable handling of the orchestral texture, exquisitely ba-lanced to revealing effect, so that you heard things you’d swear were never there before – but thankfully, never feeling in the slightest calculated.” (David Kettle, The Scotsman, 11.04.2016)
