2nd concert of the ROMANTICISM series

Sergey Rachmaninov (1873–1943)

Gustav Mahler (1860–1911)
Symphony No. 9 in D major (1909)

Estonian National Symphony Orchestra
Conductor OLARI ELTS

Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 9 is his last completed symphony, and was composed after the grandiose Symphony No. 8, also known as “Symphony of a Thousand” and “Das Lied von der Erde” (“The Song of the Earth”).

The concert will be conducted by ENSO’s principal guest conductor Olari Elts, who will be focusing on Mahler’s major pieces over the 2016/17 season.

Olari Elts: “Mahler’s compositions are shockingly modern. His Symphony No. 9 is a farewell to the 19th century – the whole Romantic period – and an entry into Modernism.”

Mahler’s successful career as a conductor, which catapulted him from the position of a kapellmeister in provincial theatres to that of musical director at the Vienna State Opera and the New York Metropolitan Opera, overshadowed his compositions at the time. The oracular words of the maestro, “my time is yet to come”, and the statement formulated as a question – “Must we always die before the public allows us to live?” – were more than accurate. The renaissance of Mahler’s music really got going in the 1960s, after the composer’s 100th birthday.

Olari Elts: “Mahler’s works are not so much about leaving but about loneliness – both literally and metaphorically. He was familiar with feeling lonely at the top. But he also knew how to enjoy it.”
