At MustonenFest one of the most beloved masterpieces in the history of music, Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi, one of the greatest Italian composers of all time, will be performed. This work was written in memory of Alessandro Manzoni, a poet and compatriot of Verdi, whom he idolized as a national hero and freedom fighter. Known mostly as an opera composer, Verdi also used operatic principles when composing his Requiem. The music for this particular mass for the dead is therefore characterized by exceptional drama and flowing melodies. Its first performance on 22 May 1874 at the church of San Marco in Milan was conducted by the composer himself marking the first anniversary of Manzoni’s death. The current performance includes international soloists with the State Choir “Latvija” under the baton of Andres Mustonen, the artistic director of the festival.
