The work presented by Tõnu Kaljuste at the second opening concert of the festival is one of the greatest achievements of Ludwig van Beethoven – “Missa solemnis” (1823), which, together with the 9th Symphony, was considered one of the most important works by the composer himself. The grand creation of Beethoven’s later period is performed by the famous Latvian mixed choir Latvija and the National Orchestra with soloists Aile Asszonyi, Helen Lepalaan ja Olari Viikholm as well as the German tenor Markus Schäfer, whose numerous accolades also include a Grammy award.
