Shakespeare’s most exuberant comedy has hitherto been known in Estonia under the title A Midsummer Night’s Dream. But since this is nowhere near an ordinary summer night, we have together with the author of its newest translation Anu Lamp created a new stage version and made its title more precise, cognitively speaking. In A Summer Solstice Night’s Slumber, William Shakespeare’s play meets the music that Felix Mendelssohn wrote especially for this play, which is considered to be one of the musical masterpieces of the 19th century. NO99 Theatre meets the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra (ERSO) and the legendary girls’ choir Ellerhein. The directors Ene-Liis Semper and Tiit Ojasoo meet the conductor Olari Elts. The inconstancy of love and the irresistibility of sensual delight meet the fluidity of contemporary virtual identities. They meet in order to coalesce into a stage production that grips the senses, a total installational work of art.

On the night of the summer solstice, when everything is possible and nothing is really how it appears to be, forces gather that have the power to create dreamlike, all-embracing, astounding beauty. Beauty that overshadows even the most intense autumn and winter darkness, and the force of habit that penetrates everywhere day by day. Sensual delight in which one could remain forever and which one never wants to leave behind. Some consider what has transpired on the night of the summer solstice to be essentially the nucleus of the aspirations of contemporary society towards temporal pleasure, others consider it the eternal paradox of the human soul. The question is how to express that untamed aspiration, how to give it form.
