The year 1813 gave the world two brilliant opera composers: on 22 May Richard Wagner was born in Germany and on 10 October Giuseppe Verdi in Italy. In 2013, the music world will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the two great composers; the opera houses of the world will give prominent place to their works, and opera galas and singing competitions will be held.
The ERSO Opera Gala will see solo performances by Heli Veskus (Estonian National Opera), Anneli Peebo (Volksoper Wien), Jyrki Anttila and Krišjānis Norvelis (Latvian National Opera). The conductor will be Eri Klas – renowned opera and orchestra conductor, long-time artistic director and principal conductor of the Estonian National Opera (1975–95), principal conductor of the Royal Swedish Opera and Kolobov Novaya Opera Theatre in Moscow and the first guest conductor of the Finnish National Opera. During his career as a conductor spanning nearly half a century more than a hundred symphony and opera orchestras have played under his baton. Eri Klas is Chairman of the Board at the Estonian National Opera and artistic director of the Tallinn Philharmonic Society.
