Claude Debussy, one of the pivotal figures of French music from the beginning of the 20th century, has written wonderful orchestral works as well as chamber and vocal music. Trying to capture the expressive style of the impressionist painters – the tonal colour, orchestral treatment and rhythmics of his symphonic sketches “The Sea” can well be compared to paintings by Claude Monet and Auguste Renoir.
Debussy-like impressionist features can also be found in a number of early orchestral works by the greatest Finnish symphonist Jean Sibelius, especially in his symphonic poem “The Oceanides” based on Greek mythology and in Symphony No. 3, which has been compared to an idyllic painting of light.
The concert is conducted by ENSO principal guest conductor, Olari Elts, who is currently working with different orchestras around the world – in 2014/15 season with the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and many others.
