The opening of the symphonic poem “Thus Spoke Zarathustra” by Richard Strauss, sunrise in the mountains through the ancient prophet’s eyes, is one of the best-known soundscapes of classical music. It has been arranged into innumerable versions, including kitsch commercials, but also felicitously as in Stanley Kubrick’s film “2001: A Space Odyssey”.

This concert opens the Eesti Kontsert season-long series “Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Richard Strauss 150”, which joins in the anniversary festivities in honour of the 19–20th Century maestro held around the globe. The series includes concerts by ENSO on 19 and 20 December under Neeme Järvi’s direction as well as chamber programmes and culminating at the beginning of May with a staged concert presentation of the opera “Ariadne on Naxos”.

The opening concert contemplates the progress of the creative spheres from Beethoven to Strauss followed by Szymanowski. Artistic adviser of the series, Olari Elts, will conduct this concert.

Tickets in Tallinn: 20 € / 15 €.
Tickets in Jõhvi: 10 € / 7.50 €.
