In the fall of 1980, was staged in Vanemuine Theatre the first Estonian rock opera Nordic Maiden, starring Silvi Vrait, Vello Toomemets, and Tõnu Kilgas alongside the popular ensemble Fix. The conductor of the opera was Endel Nõgene and the stage director Ülo Vilimaa.

Tõnu Kilgas, who portrayed one of the main characters, the Prophet, has recalled, ‘In terms of its content, Nordic Maiden was in full contradiction with the ideology of the time. The dissent was nicely hidden in the libretto of the opera, but still quite understandable. There were KGB snitches sitting in the hall – they were not total idiots, so, of course, we got into a lot of trouble. The production became such a hit that the students were about to demolish the theatre building during the performance. It was impossible to get tickets. Nordic Maiden became a cult icon. In terms of music, it was also really cool and beautiful. The melodies in the show were incredibly beautiful.’ (Where’s the joke here? Publishing House Tänapäev 2011)

Although it was an audience favourite at the time, it has not been performed in Estonia since. The fact that the music of the opera has so far been kept at the Estonian Theatre and Music Museum only as a manuscript probably plays a role here. Pervasive topics of the opera, such as the responsibility of choice and warning for the stagnation brought about by restrictions, along with engaging music, a smart libretto containing plenty of subtext and symbols, and wonderful lyrics definitely create a wonderful piece. We are grateful to Raimo Kangro, a man who left us unjustly early, and will do our best to bring the rock opera addressing timeless topics back to life.

The concert is in two acts, with a duration of 2 hours.
