Conductor GENNADY ROZHDESTVENSKY

Legendary Russian conductor Gennady Rozhdestvensky served for many years as principal conductor for the Grand Symphony Orchestra of the All-Union Radio and Central TV and the USSR Ministry of Culture Symphony Orchestra (currently known as the State Symphony Capella of Russia) as well as for the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Symphony and Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. Rozhdestvensky premièred many works by Soviet composers, and many composers, Sofia Gubaidulina and Alfred Schnittke among them, have dedicated their works to him.

Gennady Rozhdestvensky and his wife Viktoria Postnikova, a prize-winning pianist of many international competitions, are also long-standing friends and close collaborators with Arvo Pärt. It was expressly Rozhdestvensky who conducted the UK première of Pärt’s “Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten” at the Royal Albert Hall in 1979.

Maestro Rozhdestvensky has strong collaborative links with ENSO reaching back decades. Under his baton all four symphonies by Schumann were recorded in Tallinn in 1978 for the Soviet record label “Melodiya”, which in 2012 also released the recording as a double CD.
