Symphony No. 13 in B-flat minor “Babiy Yar”, Op. 113

PYOTR MIGUNOV (bass)
Estonian National Male Choir
Estonian National Symphony Orchestra
Conductor NIKOLAI ALEXEEV

Dmitri Shostakovich’ Symphony No. 13, based on poems by Yevgeni Yevtushenko, is also known as the “Babi Yar”. The first movement of the symphony is based on a poem by the same name, which caused international sensation with its opposition to anti-Semitism. “All of my symphonies are tombstones. This stone has been erected in me-mory of the victims of the genocide carried out by the Nazis,” the composer said of the symphony he wrote in 1962 for bass, male choir, and orchestra.

Shostakovich’ rarely played song cycle for Pushkin’s poems is thematically a great match for Symphony No. 13, covering themes such as betrayal, loss and memories.

The soloist will be bass Pyotr Migunov, soloist from the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre and prize-winner at numerous international competitions. The orchestra will be conducted by ENSO’s former principal conductor Nikolai Alexeev, who has been working closely with the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra for years and in addition to conducting all of the major symphony orchestras of Moscow and St Petersburg, has also conducted numerous orchestras outside Russia and given concerts in Europe, Japan and the United States. Shostakovich’ Symphony No. 13 was previously performed by ENSO in autumn 2009, when Nikolai Alexeev conducted it to commence his last season as the principal conductor of ENSO.
