This autumn the world’s music community is celebrating the 85th birthday of Sofia Gubaidulina, who is one of today’s greatest composers. Gubaidulina is a composer of Tatar heritage with an Orthodox worldview. She studied in Kazan and Moscow. Until 1992, she lived and worked in Moscow and was considered to “have gone down the same erroneous path” as a group of other composers such as Schnittke, Pärt and Denisov. Since 1992, Gubaidulina has lived in Germany. Gubaidulina’s musical images convey mystique, metaphysics and religious spirituality, and her musical fantasy often ventures into the topics of the Apocalypse and the Last Judgement.

andres-mustonen-70481989The premiere of Gubaidulina’s Oratorio will take place in Tallinn, conducted by Andres Mustonen, who has been for many years a close artistic partner of Gubaidulina and performed premieres of several of her major compositions.

geir-draugsvollGeir Draugsvoll is considered to be one of the most important musicians on his instrument, the bayan. Through collaborations with many composers, Geir Draugsvoll must be characterized as one of the pioneers on his – from a classical point of view – young instrument, and he has premiered a large number of works. This includes “Fachwerk” by Sofia Gubaidulina, which is also dedicated to Geir Draugsvoll.
