Symphony Orchestra of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre
Estonian National Symphony Orchestra
Conductor PAUL MÄGI
The traditional concert by ENSO and the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre will be conducted by Paul Mägi, the musical director and principal conductor of Vanemuine Theatre. As a valued orchestra and opera conductor, he has worked with symphony orchestras in Europe as well as America. In addition to the Estonian National Opera, where he worked for many years as the artistic director and principal conductor, he has collaborated with the Finnish National Opera, the Royal Swedish Opera, the Malmö Opera, the Angers-Nantes Opéra, the Helikon-Opera of Moscow, and many others. Paul Mägi is a professor of orchestral conducting at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and a visiting professor at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.
The main work of the concert is Symphony No. 10 by Shostakovich, which was planned for a long time and was completed just after Stalin’s death.
Paul Mägi: ‘Shostakovich, the most outstanding composer of the twentieth century, also affects the open-minded person of the twenty-first century with his deeply perceived and masterfully done work. His Symphony No. 10 is a vivid generalisation of the contradictions of human nature through the flowing force of music.’
The soloist of the concert and the work performed by them will become known at the end of November, when the winner of the IX Estonian Piano Competition is announced.
