Northwind Pictures
Dancing in the Dark

Colin Currie (percussion)
Estonian National Symphony Orchestra
Conductor HK GRUBER

The second programme by ERSO at NYYD Festival is the concert of the works of HK (Heinz Karl) Gruber, a versatile musician of world renown and the leading figure of the so-called Third Viennese School.

The performances of HK Gruber’s breakthrough composition, the pandemonium Frankenstein!! (1978) continue to circle the world (in Estonia at Von Krahl Theatre in 1999 with the NYYD Ensemble). Since Frankenstein!!, Gruber has been a frequent guest at the most prestigious concert centres and festivals, either as a composer, conductor or chanson singer. He has conducted, for example, the Vienna and Los Angeles Philharmonics, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra, Ensemble Modern and Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Since 2009 he has been the resident composer and conductor of BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

The concert gives a broad overview of Gruber’s orchestral compositions: his virtuoso Concerto for Percussion Rough Music, with Colin Currie, one of the best-known performers of new music, as a soloist, Dancing in the Dark commissioned by the Vienna Philharmonic and Simon Rattle, and Northwind Pictures that premièred at Grafenegg Festival a few months ago.

Concert is produced by Eesti Kontsert & ERSO.
Tickets: 15 € / concessions for students and pensioners 11 €.
