TALLINN –> ST PETERSBURG
2nd concert of the FESTIVO series
Piotr Tchaikovsky. Festival Coronation March
Artur Lemba. Piano Concerto No 1 in G major
Dmitri Shostakovich. Symphony No 5 in D minor, Op 47
The concerts at the Grand Hall of the St Petersburg Philharmonia have always had a particular significance for ERSO. Their last concert there was in March 2012 conducted by Andres Mustonen; in November 2012, however, after more than thirty years, ERSO will perform there once again under principal conductor Neeme Järvi. The repertoire is anything but modest, showcasing Shostakovich’s famous Symphony No 5, which premiered triumphantly in the same hall three quarters of a century ago conducted by Yevgeny Mravinsky.
The young Estonian pianist Mihkel Poll will make his debut in Saint Petersburg. Poll, who is currently pursuing postgraduate studies at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and the London Guildhall School of Music and Drama, has won Guildhall School’s Wigmore Recital Prize this year and played a brilliant debut concert at London’s famous Wigmore Hall, which, judging by the ardent applause from the London audience, was a great success. “Several music critics who were present at the concert praised Poll’s courage in selecting a complicated programme and predicted him a great future.” (Silver Tambur, Eesti Päevaleht, 19 June 2012). In addition to European countries, the winner of numerous competitions has also performed successful concerts in New York and Washington.
Tickets in Tallinn: 20 € / concessions for students and pensioners 15 €.
