2nd concert of the MASTERCLASS series
Alban Berg (1885–1935). Passacaglia, arr Christian von Borries (1913/1999)
Eduard Tubin (1905–1982). Double Bass Concerto (1948)
Gustav Mahler (1860–1911). Symphony No. 5 in C sharp minor (1902)
Younger generation Latvian double-bassist Gunārs Upatnieks begins his fourth season in the ranks of the Berlin Philharmonic this autumn. Previously, he worked as leader of the double bass section of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra. The international career of this young talent began with numerous competition victories, of which the most prestigious were first prize and audience prize at the ARD International Music Competition held in Munich (2009).
The Concerto for Double Bass by Eduard Tubin was written on commission for the Estonian double bass virtuoso, Ludvig Juht, a long-time bassist for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Present performance is dedicated to his 120th birthday.
In the second half of the concert, audiences will hear Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, known for its funeral march in the first movement beginning with the famous trumpet solo and delightfully beautiful Adagietto, which is often performed as a separate piece in concerts and used in films.
The concert is conducted by principal guest conductor of ENSO, Olari Elts, who currently works with different orchestras around the world – in 2014/15 season with the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Vienna Symphonic Orchestra and many others.
