Conductor THOMAS ZEHETMAIR
Austrian solo violinist and conductor Thomas Zehetmair to perform for the first time in Estonia!
“A virtuoso technique married to a musical mind that won’t take anything for granted. Zehetmair seems to find answers where other musicians don’t even see questions.” (Andrew McGregor, BBC Radio 3).
Wide-ranging international activity as a solo violinist, conductor and chamber musician makes Thomas Zehetmair an extraordinary artist in the current musical scene. He works in close cooperation with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra in Minnesota, and from the 2016/2017 season he is the principal conductor of the Winterthur Musikkollegium in Switzerland. Working as the principal conductor of the Royal Northern Sinfonia from 2012 to 2014, he lifted the orchestra to become one of the best in England. Zehetmair now continues close cooperation with the orchestra as its honorary conductor.
Estonian soprano Maria Valdmaa excels in both historical and contemporary repertoire and has performed as a soloist across Europe and in the USA, singing repertoire from Schütz and Mozart, to Pärt and beyond. Her voice has been described by critics as “natural and exceptionally beautifully coloured”. She has sung under the baton of such well-respected musicians as Laurence Cummings, Daniel Reuss, Tõnu Kaljuste, Roy Goodman and Marc Minkowski. She is a soloist with the Het Nederlands Kamerkoor (Dutch Chamber Choir), as well as a member of the award winning Ensemble Vox Luminis. In 2014 she won the Michael Oliver Prize and the audience prize (Michael Normington Prize) at the Handel Singing Competition, London.

The “Maestro” concert series is a true parade of stars: conducting for the first time in Estonia are Thomas Zehetmair, the internationally recognized Austrian violinist and conductor, as well as Robert Trevino, a younger generation American conductor who has quickly gained international recognition and will start his second season as the principal conductor of the Basque National Orchestra. They are seconded by Olari Elts, the guest principal conductor at ENSO, who is often praised for his excellent skills in concert programming as well as his irresistible energy and joy in music-making. Soloists include Baiba Skride, the Latvian violinist working with the world’s best orchestras, here performing Eller’s violin concerto, and Irina Zakharenkova, one of the most original pianists in Estonia, who will perform Schumann’s Piano Concerto.
